Sewing Room Makeover
As I was going through some old photos, I realized that while I posted this on Facebook, I never put it on my blog. Every two years I take a lot of time off between Christmas and New Year’s. December of 2014 was one of those years, and I decided I needed to overhaul my sewing room. It turned out better than I could have expected. 🙂
I moved into my house October 1, 2013. It took me a good six months or so before I could even get enough boxes out of the spare bedroom to set up my machine and do any kind of sewing. That led to my From Frightening to Functional in Five Days post. As I accumulated more machines and fabric however, that space became less and less functional…and quite the disaster.
After a great deal of time and pinning on Pinterest, I decided up was the way to go. I loved how many of the sewists used peg boards for storage. And not peg boards like in my garage. Many of them were painted and framed and simply looked beautiful. I spent a good three days painting peg boards and adding a distressed rustic frame to each one. My foray into wood glue was definitely not good for my carpet, but as I did more, it was easier. They turned out wonderfully.
I picked up another folding table from Lowes so I could have two areas. One for my regular sewing machine and one for my serger and coverstitch machine. My friend Greg had dropped off some fabric that a wedding planner had left at one of his venues. He called them many times, but no one ever got back to him. Their loss was my gain, because the satiny silver fabric was perfect for my table skirts. I used two tablecloths that had been laying around for the tops. A little elastic, and I was good to go.
The last thing I added was a custom cutting table. That is fancy code for…I cut up the old door that I took off the basement stairs, covered it in batting and ironing board fabric, and attached it to four Walmart bookcases. 🙂
AS you can see, that was about a month later when things started getting messy again.
But I am so happy and the room has been so functional this past year or so. Having everything organized and out of the way has been my life infinitely easier. Hopefully soon I can do a follow-up post to introduce my new sewing machine and you can see that the room has managed to remain pretty organized, even after a year. 🙂
